Tallahatta Sandstone: Geochemistry
There is considerable scatter in trace element plots of grains, opal cement and chalcedony cement from Tallahatta Sandstone samples. The only consistent difference was that opal cement was generally enriched in alkali and alkaline earth elements compared to chalcedony and detrital quartz grains.
These electron microprobe scatter plots document trace elements in Tallahatta Sandstone grains, opal cement, and chalcedony cement. Each symbol refers to an analysis on a specific sample of sandstone. The samples were collected from several sites in Clarke and Choctaw Counties.

Geochemical variation on the basis of electron microprobe data does not seem sensitive enough to distinguish the source areas of Tallahatta Sandstone. We are currently using XRF (x-ray Fluorescence) to better document the geochemical signatures of south Alabama lithic materials.
