Tallahatta Chert Distribution

Based on our study, sporadic exposures of Tallahatta Formation crop out in a belt across southern Alabama. Reasonably good sedimentary sections can be found along Highway 69 north of Coffeeville, near Little Stave Creek near Jackson, and along Highway 17 near Butler (Copeland, 1968). Tallahatta Chert suitable for knapping is found as float in a restricted area. In place seam material is rather rare, but large sheets are commonly found in river and stream channels, presumably because it was concentrated there through the action of running water.

Alabama state site file data record four Tallahatta Chert quarries in Clarke County, and two in Washington County. We were unable to visit those quarries reported for Washington County.

The four quarries in Clarke County are all located west of Jackson within approximately a one mile radius of each other. Whether Tallahatta Chert is truly restricted in its availability is an important question for investigation.

As with Tallahatta Sandstone, chert artifacts are recovered outside of counties for which quarries are reported, but apparently in lower frequencies.
