| Ocala Chert: Nomenclature | ||||
|
Ocala Chert has also been called Coastal Plain Chert in recognition of its distribution along the southeastern coastal plain of Alabama. In order to standardize the nomenclature of lithic materials and to avoid future confusion, we recommend calling this chert Ocala Chert. This associates the material with Ocala Limestone, the most likely source rock of the material, and also employs the correct geological nomenclature for the rock type. Ocala Chert is mostly composed of cryptocrystalline silica ("chert"). |
