| Ocala Chert and Tallahatta Chert: Geochemistry | ||||||
| Trace element geochemical variation for select specimens of Ocala Chert and Tallahatta Chert are summarized below. As a general observation, there are no obvious clusters in these data. Our analyses are not yet complete, but it is likely that electron microprobe analysis will prove too insensitive to chert geochemistry to be a useful tool for discriminating the source of these lithic materials. |

These charts depict electron microprobe scatter plots of trace elements in Tallahatta Chert and Ocala Chert. Each symbol refers to an analysis on a specific sample. The samples were collected from several sites in Clarke, Choctaw, Henry and Houston Counties.
Geochemical variation on the basis of electron microprobe data does not seem sensitive enough to distinguish the source area of the cherts. We plan on conducting some XRF and micro XRF analyses of select chert specimens from this study in the future. This will give more of a bulk chemical analysis, but we will be able to analyze a more complete geochemical spectrum. |
