Ocala Chert Distribution

Ocala Chert is distributed as float and scatter across southeastern Alabama. It appears to be concretionary in its distribution (i.e., it formed as silicified seams within limestone). The largest blocks exceed 1 m in diameter and were extracted from the subsurface during road building or construction in Henry County. These blocks are now on display at a commercial property in Dothan. Most fragments of Ocala Chert are fist-sized or smaller.

Ocala Chert quarries were positively identified in two counties. One site was found in Henry County, and seven sites were found in Houston County. However, the distribution of this material in these counties is much more widespread. Some quarry sites are well known for the amount of flake debris exposed on the surface and the wide area that these sites cover.
