Ocala Chert is found in nodule form. These nodules can range from the size of a baseball to the size of a small car. Most samples collected during this study were found in the vicinity of known archaeological sites. A variety of flake debris was recovered with a focus on core reduction. Artifacts produced from Ocala Chert in Alabama range in age from Paleoindian to European contact. Large bifaces and biface fragments of Ocala Chert were commonly noted at archaeological sites in the area. Such bifaces may have served as heavy-duty tools for a variety of cutting or chopping tasks, but also would have provided a ready source of flake tools for expedient use. Not suprisingly, amorphous cores were commonly observed at quarry sites from which a few flakes were removed before the core was discarded.
